Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

store, handle and transport explosives in underground coal mines on at least two occasions, including:

planning and preparing to handle and transport explosives

receiving and despatching explosives

segregating explosives and accessories

completing rotation of explosives in magazine

maintaining stock records and report discrepancies

selecting explosives and accessories according to shot plan

storing; handling and transporting explosives

accessing and managing explosives storage

implementing required signage.

During the above, the candidate must:

locate and apply relevant documentation and procedures and confirm work activity is compliant.


Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

key legislation required to store, handle and transport explosives, including those relating to:

dangerous goods requirements

storage and segregation of explosives

records and reporting requirements

permitted explosives categories

key procedures and documentation required to store, handle and transport explosives, including:

shot plan

site security plan

labelling requirements

equipment safety requirements

work health and safety requirements and procedures

emergency procedures

site operational systems, procedures and checks

Australian standards and codes of practice relating to storage, handling and transport of explosives

manufacturer specifications

types, characteristics technical capabilities and limitations of explosives, accessories and relevant equipment

principles and techniques for identifying and responding to relevant hazards and emergencies

basic techniques for communicating job activities with others.
